Buxton Museum and Art Gallery, run by Derbyshire County Council, required specialised storage solutions for their diverse and historically significant collection. They approached DeepStore, known for its secure and unique storage facilities, to ensure the preservation and safety of their items.

Buxton Museum and Art Gallery’s collection encompasses history, geology and archaeology primarily from the Peak District and Derbyshire. The building was erected in 1875 and originally served as the Peak Hydropathic Hotel. Due to a relocation at the beginning of March, the building needed to be emptied as soon as possible.

One of our dedicated Business Development Managers along with our Transport Manager visited the museum, located in a Victorian building with multiple floors and challenging access points. They meticulously assessed the items that needed preparation and palletising for transport.

The museum’s collection is a treasure trove of historical artefacts, including:

  • Prehistoric and Roman artefacts
  • Human skeletal remains (HSR)
  • Fossils and minerals
  • Objects reflecting local communities and industries

Given the complexity of the site, careful planning was essential. The uplift spanned six days, during which our team secured and prepared the items for transport to Winsford, Cheshire. This process involved extremely detailed planning to address the tricky access points and multiple floors of the building as well as, precise preparation, ensuring all 1450 boxes, crates and oversized items were prepped and palletised for safe and secure transportation.

The primary challenge was the steeply sloped driveway between the building and the transport vehicle. However, with thorough attention to detail and careful handling, the team ensured smooth movement of all items. The uplift was successfully completed. Our team took every precaution to guarantee the safety and preservation of the historically significant items.
