After more than two decades of dedicated service, we bid a fond farewell to John Sadler, Senior Document Coordinator, as he embarks on a well-earned retirement.
John joined DeepStore in 2003, back when the company was still in its early days. Over the years, he’s played a pivotal role in the documentation team, overseeing daily requests from TNA and London, and ensuring the smooth flow of documents through the DORIS system. As the senior member of a six-person team, John has always taken immense pride in their output—especially during challenging times.

When asked about his favourite part of the job, John doesn’t hesitate: “The people at the mine. The engagement, the teamwork, and the witty remarks over the years have made it all worthwhile.”
He fondly remembers a humorous encounter with a team of nurses visiting the mine. “One asked if we had cobwebs and mice down there,” he laughs. “I reassured her—nothing survives 500 feet underground!”
Outside of work, John finds inspiration in the countryside, enjoys walking, and has a deep passion for music and gardening. He’s also known for his philosophical side—if he could have any superpower, it would be to travel 500 years into the future to see how far humanity has come.
When it comes to DeepStore’s services, John holds a special place for The National Archives. “I witnessed the signing of the contract and saw firsthand the collaboration and growth that followed. It was a proud moment.”
And finally, in true John fashion, when asked what item he’d be if he were in storage, he replied:
“A massive block of 24-carat gold—so if anyone at the mine or on the surface fell on hard times, it could be converted to cash for all.”
On Thursday 6th November, John received a wonderful and well-deserved farewell from all the staff at The National Archives (TNA).
The day included a special tour of the archives, thoughtful gifts, and warm messages of appreciation, including a personal letter from the Chief Executive & Keeper of Public Records.
It was a truly memorable occasion celebrating John’s incredible contribution and over 21 years of exceptional service.
John, your humour, dedication, and warmth will be greatly missed. Thank you for everything, and we wish you and your wife Barbara all the best in your next chapter!
