On Thursday 2nd February 2023, two of our employees had the pleasure to attend a local primary school based in Winsford, to educate the school children on the history of the rock salt mine that lies beneath their town.

The school children were taken back in time, to learn about the formation of rock salt 220 million years ago, its first discovery in Northwich in 1670, to the opening of the Winsford rock salt mine in 1844. The children also learnt about how mining techniques and safety has evolved over the years, with the use of photos and videos to see the miners in action.

During the talk, the children also learnt about the opening of DeepStore in 1998, to utilise the stable and secure environment of the salt mine to preserve documents and artefacts for generations to come.

The children had the opportunity to dress up in miners’ safety equipment, see lumps of rock salt and took part in a mini quiz.

The history school talk was the first of its kind for the Company and was a huge success. We look forward to continuing our support within the community.
