In December 2023, two of our colleagues had the pleasure of visiting Cuddington Primary School to teach the school children about the formation of rock salt and the history of the Winsford rock salt mine.
The informative presentation covered topics such as the formation of rock salt, local rock salt history, the evolution of mining processes, and the opening of DeepStore in 1998, utilising the stable and secure environment to preserve documents and artefacts for future generations.
Additionally, the talk included a show-and-tell session, allowing the school children to hold pieces of rock salt along with mining personal protective equipment that they could try on.
“Chris and Jess enriched Cuddington Primary School’s curriculum by providing a local history and geology lesson as well as opening their minds to a possible future career in the mining industry.”

Pupils shared their glowing reviews:
“It was interesting looking at photos of the technology miners use today and compare it to when the mine first opened in 1844,” said Sophia
“I learned about DeepStore and how they store important items,” said Aaron and Daisy
“I would like to be a miner when I grow up and work in the Winsford salt mine,” said Hamish
“That was my best day ever!” said Alex

The school talk was a huge success and helped further our commitment to support our communities.
