For many years, our client struggled to store 900 years worth of archives, including thousands of books. When their existing facilities could no longer hold any further records or provide good working conditions for staff and users, a new solution was urgently required.
After detailed negotiations, a partnership agreement was signed with DeepStore in which the client rented floor space in the mine, while DeepStore was contracted to manage the vast archive. DeepStore provided customised facilities to meet the client's immediate storage requirements. A 250 sq. metre area was walled off to create a self-contained storage chamber, complete with dual air locks.
Controlled personnel and material access routes were designed in compliance with the environmental requirements of BS5454:2000 for the storage of archival documents. Under the supervision of expert archivists, the records were then transferred, safe and sound, to their new home. The project was such a success that plans were made to extend the archives further.
Recently, this expansion and upgrade has taken place, and the amount of shelf space available to our client has been tripled. This illustrates one particular benefit of choosing DeepStore - we'll never run out of space.
The facility was inspected and approved in the first instance by the Royal Commission on Historical Manuscripts, and has since been re-inspected and approved by the National Archives.
